Kurzfassung:

Students work on an interdisciplinary project that requires treatment by methods of Computational Science and Engineering. The project will be defined in cooperation with one supervisor from the application area and one from numerical methods and scientific computing, optimization, optimal control or computer science.

Lernziele:

  • Ability to understand and analyse a typical problem in the field of Computational Science and Engineering (CSE), coming from the chosen application
  • Ability to work on methods of CSE to solve the given task
  • Ability to conduct and present scientific work and results
  • Ability to work in teams and interdisciplinary

Lehrinhalte:

Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) is an interdisciplinary research field. It is driven by application problems or tasks form natural science, engineering or economics. In these disciplines, numerical simulation is more and more used as powerful method. It thus complements both laboratory experiments and pure theoretical research. CSE thus involves methods of applied mathematics and computer science.

A typical project consists of

  • self-study on motivation and theoretical background of the project (both from the application and the mathematical or informatics point of view)
  • development and implementation of computational methods to solve the given task
  • conduction of numerical experiments
  • documentation, evaluation and presentation of results.

Work can be performed in teams.

Weitere Voraussetzungen:

  • Basic knowledge of the chosen application field
  • Knowledge in necessary numerical methods
  • Programming skills

Prüfungsleistung:

Oral presentation, project report
