Kurzfassung:

This course provides practical training in the core skills required in computer science research.

It is aimed at Master level students who want to pursue research in computer science.

Lernziele:

By the end of the course the students should have improved their abilities in the practical aspects of research. They should:

  • Understand the requirements of English scientific writing, and apply these to their own writing.
  • Be able to review scientific papers.
  • Be able to write a research proposal.
  • Be able to give and use contructive feedback.
  • Be able to prepare and deliver an academic presentation.

Lehrinhalte:

The main topics this course will cover are:

  • Reading and reviewing: critical reading, the review process, developing a reading plan
  • Writing: how to write good research papers. Scope, organisation, style. Presenting experimental results, mathematics and algorithms. Editing.
  • Presenting: preparing and delivering a research presentation.
  • Experimental methods: how to design sound experiments, how to analyse and present data.
  • The research process: indentifying a topic, developing a research project.
  • Making the most out of conferences and other opportunities.

Prüfungsleistung:

Written coursework (Hausarbeit) at the end of the course.

Lehr- und Lernmethoden:

Lectures with beamer, reading, written exercises, optional oral presentation.

Verwendbarkeit:

This course will prepare students for their Master and Doctoral research projects, as well as their future research careers, by helping them avoid common pitfalls and improving their abilities in the practical aspects of research. At the end of the course the students should be able to write strong Ph.D applications which demonstrate that they understand the requirements of research and can present research ideas eloquently.
