Kurzfassung:

This module will introduce basic bioinformatics approaches including some of the required biological as well as computer science background knowledge (Lecture Bioinformatics). Moreover, typical bioinformatics workflows will be covered. The Systems Biology lecture will introduce Systems Biology approaches for the analysis and interpretation of large-scale (medical) data sets.

Lernziele:

Knowledge: Students

  • have a thorough understanding of the concepts of bioinformatics and systems biology
  • have a sound grasp of bioinformatical workflows
  • know the most important data processing techniques for interpretation of large data sets

Skills: Students

  • can formulate potential hypotheses based on bioinformatical data analysis results
  • can discuss topics in systems biology adequately with informatics fellow students (terminology and argumentation in discussions subject related and relevant)
  • can use their knowledge to work with modeling approaches in future research projects

Lehrinhalte:

Lecture Bioinformatics (Winter term):

  • Bioinformatics databases
  • String search and sequence alignments
  • Phylogeny
  • Approaches for high-content data processing

Lecture Systems Biology (summer term):

  • Basics of Systems Biology (models, systems, states, trajectories, Systems Biology workflow)
  • Models in Systems Biology
  • Modelling of metabolic networks & reconstruction of networks
  • Data analysis approaches
  • Methods for analysis and interpretation of large-scale medical data sets in the context of metabolism

Weitere Voraussetzungen:

Prüfungsleistung:

At least 80% of exercises have to be passed in with at least 50% of cumulative points over the entire semester for the written or oral exam. Graded written or oral exam for each lecture depending on the number of participants at the end of the semester. Final grades will be calculated as mean of the grades from the two exams. The exam will take place during the examination period of the respective semester with a possible repetition after failure before the start of the next semester (according to the official examination periods).
