Kurzfassung:

This module gives an introduction to core Internet technologies, namely connectionless packet transmission and routing. The link to the mostly transmission-oriented modules of the master program "Digital Communications" is established by an introduction to LAN technology for both wired and wireless LANs.

Lernziele:

The students are enabled to assess network and data link layer services and protocols according to different QoS criteria. They become acquainted with new developments in the networking area. They have basic capabilities for LAN installation, operation, and maintenance.

Lehrinhalte:

• Introduction into the ISO/OSI reference model for open

systems interconnection

• Packet and circuit switching

In-depth discussion of data link protocols and their mechanisms for flow control and error handling

• Local area networks of different technologies (wired

and wireless), their topologies and their media access control protocols

• IP-based Internetworking: Overview over routing

methods, detailed discussion of IP routing and forwarding and related routing protocols
